The course comprises 41 modules plus an introductory chapter covering the South African context. All attendees receive a certificate on completion. There are 6.5 hours of video which are accompanied by in-line text and PDF handouts. There are short tests after key chapters to be completed before progressing to the proceeding modules.

Is it the norm in the UK, Ireland, EU and Middle Eastern design & construction teams to appoint Design Managers and it is less common in South Africa so most of the content is based on an international context. The videos reference the UK legislation and systems, but the handouts have been modified to include South African references.

Why would an architect do this course?
All architects manage the delivery of design and this course can help architects hone their project-design-management skills. The standalone role is also a newly emerging role in South Africa. Also, increasingly, SA architects are collaborating with international investors and studios, and liaising with their representative Design Managers and many emigrate to work abroad.
