The entire life-cycle of a building is determined and shaped by design and effective design management should result in the seamless transition of the design from inception to project completion. Design management is a process of managing people, information, resources, and innovative technology.
The Design Management Consultancy can help to keep design and technical managers up to date with industry news, changes to the regulations and the latest developments. We at the DMC offer design management services either on a part-time freelance basis or long-term with ongoing contracts.
We have created a CPD - Design Management Course for the UK industry which can be completed online or licensed as part of in-house company training. It offers an invaluable overview of all aspects of the role, and ideal for anyone interested in entering the profession or progressing their career.
The design process is the flow of information to aid planning, procurement and construction through all stages of the works. Nearly all aspects of construction are influenced in one way or another by design, and design management. Design management is multi-layered and diverse, and the implementation will differ from project to project. It is intrinsically connected to all aspects of a project such as safety, sustainability, buildability and quality.
Design management is not necessarily a person or an assigned role but rather a function, and is the mechanism underlying and expediting the entire design development and delivery process. Design professionals are the creators and translators of the architectural and engineering design delivery and all associated specialist input. A designer is focused on the configuration of the building, and the design management function facilitates this activity. This facilitator could be an organisation or an individual.
However, more recently in the UK construction industry, consultant design managers are being appointed by main contractors, subcontractors, and developers because those project teams may not have the design management function in-house. On large, complex projects with multidisciplinary teams of consultants, a consultant design manager may be appointed to support the architectural and engineering designers.
